Boxing, is a storied event within the Olympic Games, having been a part of the international sports competition since the 1904 St. Louis Games. However, the female version of the event has only been contested at the Games since the 2012 London Olympics and while a modern addition, the sport’s footwear has yet to accomodate for the female body’s specific needs. Via a Cotton Works Grant, an in-depth exploration of cotton canvas was investigated to determine its application to performance products.
This reinvent of the Converse All-Star sought to integrate performance features that aid the female body based on its biomechanical movement patterns and physiological limitations. Through an in depth analysis of the All-Star design, competitor landscape and material studies I aimed to create a design that increases lockdown, implements targeted cushioning and an asymmetrical traction pattern. With the intent to improve athletic performance and maintain the Converse silhouette, while overcoming the canvas’ limitations.
